January & February, 2008: "Winter Speaker Series," Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
The annual Winter Speaker Series is sponsored by the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center and Yellowstone National Park. The programs often include slide shows and are always interactive. Participants get to ask all the questions they would have just wondered about had an expert not been right at hand. Program topics range from elk and bison to thermal features and geology. Evening programs will be held throughout January and February at the Center. Call for more information, (406) 646-7701.

The Intermountain Division's JO Qualifier includes a sprint race on the first day and a classic race on the second. Come watch the region's best young cross country skiers as they compete to reach the National Qualifier.

March 2008: 29th Annual Yellowstone Rendezvous Marathon Ski Race
Held on the world-class Rendezvous Ski Trails, this event draws hundreds of cross-country skiers. With the blast of a black powder cannon, racers sprint out to compete in a variety of age classes and distances in both classic and freestyle skiing on courses ranging from 5 to 50K. With grooming provided by Yellowstone Track Systems, this is arguably the best track to be found all year. Now in its 27th year, the Rendezvous attracts many of the top team racers as well as those new to the sport.

March  2008: West Yellowstone Youth Festival
Only for kids and sponsored by the West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation. The Youth Festival is an opportunity for our future Olympians, World Cup Skiers and National Masters competitors to participate in an event that is just for them. Typically, youth from ages 3 to 15 participate in a series of fun events such as an obstacle course matched sprints, relay and speed trap. March 2008: EXPANDED EXPO! 17th Annual World Snowmobile EXPO 2007
A terrific end and beginning for snowmobilers! West Yellowstone's World Snowmobile Expo 2006 combines top-notch racing with a first look at the upcoming season's new  products. The Expo culminates a year of Sno West RMXCRC "Best of the Best" Sno-Cross racing with four days of racing thrills. Snowmobile manufacturers and after-market companies strut their 2008 stuff at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort Exhibition Hall. Nighttime activities include a "Funny-Money" Casino night, live entertainment and plenty of laughs. Plan now to attend!

The ultimate on-hill event in the region! This 3-stage competition begins with a timed hike to the top of the Headwaters ridge, followed by a style competition down the Headwaters terrain, ending with a timed Super G race to the finish!

April 1st through April 19th, 2008:  Bicycles Only in Yellowstone National Park
Bicycle in Yellowstone for free and before the Park is open to public automobiles or buses. It’s a perfect way to spend a day. From West Yellowstone you can ride to Madison Junction and then to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone or Mammoth Hot Springs (the road between Madison and Old Faithful remains closed to all until April 18th and no services are available in the Park).  Feet and rollerblades are welcome, too

April TBA 2008: 4th Annual Big Sky Spring Run-off, Big Sky Resort
Back by popular demand. We're building it bigger and better each year, with a 100-foot pond that skiers and snowboarders navigate across or in some cases crash directly into. This end of season event will also feature live music, drink and food specials and an after party.

  June -October 2008:  The Painted Buffalo Roam West Yellowstone!
  
Come to West Yellowstone, Montana and follow the Painted Buffalo Treasure Trail map. 
   Twenty-six painted fiberglass buffalo are now on display in and around West Yellowstone.
   Treasure trail maps are available at the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce or from   
    any of the sponsors.  Anyone can follow the map, answer questions about the painted        
    buffalo, and redeem their answers for special discounts and prizes from participating
    merchants. The big question for everyone is “Where is Frances now?” as she roams West
    Yellowstone stopping temporarily at different locations. Buffalo Roam merchandise is now
    available at authorized merchant retailers.

   A celebration of the first Union Pacific passenger train to arrive in West Yellowstone in  
   1908. Centered around the historic Union Pacific Dining Hall, folks can deck out in 
   period costumes, listen to speakers, visit exhibits, and enjoy a variety of food. (Make 
  
sure to also relive the travels of the Park’s first visitors by touring a 1903 Oregon Short 
   Line Executive Railcar at the Holiday Inn. Beautifully restored to its original condition, 
  
  
visitors can walk through and even sit down for a break!)

   June TBA 2008:  "Stars over Yellowstone: Evening Program" 9:30 PM
  
Join the Museum of the Rockies and local astronomers at the Madison Campground
    Amphitheater as they find constellations, hear star stories, and  view the skies using
    telescopes. Each night features a different a different topic.

  
   June TBA 2008:  Janet Clarkson Memorial Triathlon 
  
Janet Clarkson was an avid participant in many racing events. Janet passed away at 
    age 37 from Ewing's Sarcoma, a bone cancer. This annual event in honor of Janet, and 
    for the benefit of the West Yellowstone School's Scholarship Fund and the American 
  
   
Cancer Society, is held in and around Janet's summer-time home, the Madison Arm 
    Resort on Hebgen Lake. A .64 mile swim is followed by a 7.3 mile bicycle ride and 
    concludes with a 5.2 mile run. An awards dinner and dance follow the competition.

   June TBA 2008: Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo
  
Born in the past to ease the cowboys' boredom, today's rodeos are pure excitement! 
    Bareback Riding, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Breakaway Roping and Bull 
    Riding are just some of the scheduled events. Performances are at 7:30 pm each night 
    and will be held at the Rodeo arena just six miles west of town. Join the fun!


   June TBA 2008:  WYSEF Adventure - Wildflower Hike
   Meet WYSEF board member Barb Batey in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot at
   9:00 AM, Saturday, June 23 and head out into the woods to see and learn about our
   regions wildflowers. Participants should be prepared to hike for a minimum of 2 hours.

November 4th, 2007:  Last day for Yellowstone National Park
All park roads close at 8:00 am November 4th, 2007 except the North Entrance road to Silver Gate & Cooke City, Montana.

November 2nd -4th, 2007 -  Snow USA Show, The New Exposition, Convention and Conference Center, Novi Michigan   Please stop by and visit our booth!

November 20-24th, 2007: Yellowstone Ski Festival (formerly Rendezvous Nordic Ski Camp) This is a must for every cross-country skier. West Yellowstone literally comes alive in lycra  in November. Hundreds of Nordic ski enthusiasts from all over the world, novice to expert, gather to learn more about the sport, practice techniques and see new equipment. Early snows, superb grooming, racing opportunities and the Nordic Skiing Exposition make this an especially inviting time. On-snow clinics take place from November 21-26 NORAM ski races and the Ski Exposition will also be highlights of the week.

This is a sport for speed, body control and endurance, combining Nordic skiing with accuracy in target shooting. A Super Sprint event is followed by the first races in the NORAM series.

National Guard Western Regional Biathlon Championships and NorAM Event  Biathletes from the United States and Canada will be gathering from some good, though, friendly competition. December 16- 25th, 2007: "Christmas with the Critters," Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
Bring a Christmas present and receive a $1.25 off admission (one per person). What to bring?  Ideas for the bears:  a jar of peanut butter, honey, trail mix, maple syrup.  For the wolves:  spices such as ginger, cinnamon, cloves; peppermint or lavender oil; strawberry or pineapple extracts.  (Wolves are stimulated by the smell of these items and like to anoint and roll in the scent.)

December 16th, 2007: Christmas Bird Count
Join with others here in West Yellowstone and more than 2000 groups around the US who will be participating in this Audubon sponsored event. Anyone interested in looking for and counting birds on this particular Sunday will meet at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center at 8:00 am in the morning.
